2007-01-21 13:54:16 - New Server Added - RAID 5 (3 250 Gig Drives), 500 Gig Backup Drive. What is RAID 5? This is a no-fault drive setup. Should one drive go bad the other two drives will work off a copy of the drive. This allows easy replacement of the failed drive with no data loss. Just replace the failed drive and the other two drives will replace the data from the old drive to the new drive. This allows us to reduce downtime due to a failed hard drive which is quite common. On a non-raid server down time can be 12 or more hours to replace a drive. Data loss is possible since backups would have to be used. With RAID 5 there is little to no down time and zero data loss if a drive fails.
